Off-duty Sergeant Major Powaret Banjong, 31, had been visiting the packed restaurant on Saturday night when he intervened in an argument on a nearby table.
The dispute involved local gangster Somchai Saechua, 49, who was allegedly drunk and shouting at a woman just after midnight.
The mafia figure allegedly produced a gun and opened fire on the cop – who was celebrating a birthday with friends – hitting him in the thigh and forearm.
But a third bullet which was heading for Powaret’s groin was prevented from making contact after it smashed into the iPhone he had in his right pocket. The smartphone’s screen was shattered and there was a bullet-hole in the top right corner – but the bullet did not penetrate the other side.
Powaret collapsed on the ground and his colleague, Lance Corporal Naretrak Krueawara, 30, grabbed the 9mm semi-automactic handgun and continued the shootout as more than 200 diners ran for cover.
The gangster was shot in the stomach and right temple, arm, stomach and leg. Police and medics arrived and known criminal Somchai was taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition.
Powaret is also recovering in hospital while the alleged gangster Somchai has been charged with attempted murder.
De inmediato, un compañero del oficial tomó su arma de cargo y repelió el ataque mientras los comensales del sitio salían corriendo. Producto del enfrentamiento, el sujeto terminó con balazos en el estómago, la sien, un brazo y una pierna, siendo hospitalizado en estado crítico.
El oficial, quien también fue trasladado a un nosocomio, se dijo afortunado por seguir vivo y que su celular le haya impedido ser baleado. “Dos balas están bien, pero tres habrían sido más difíciles de sobrevivir”, dijo.
Aunque la dupla policiaca no recibirá sanción alguna por el tiroteo, por haber actuado en defensa propia, el caso será investigado con sumo cuidado, adelantó el jefe de la Policía, Apichai Krobtech.
